This question explores how much of the stock market is actually controlled or owned by large institutional investors, wealthy individuals, governments, corporations, and other major shareholders. Who holds the biggest share of publicly traded stocks, and how concentrated is stock ownership today?

Share your thoughts, data, or examples. Do you think a small group of investors and institutions has a major influence on the market, or is ownership more widely distributed than it appears? What do you think?

If you mean “Who owns most of the Indian stock market?”, there is no single group that owns 90%.

Recent NSE data shows roughly:

  • Domestic institutional investors (DIIs): 19.5%
  • Individual investors (direct + indirect): 19.3%
  • Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs): 15.1%
  • The remaining ownership is largely promoters, governments, corporates and other categories.

One important distinction: “ownership” and “trading activity” are different. For example, SEBI's data showed individuals accounted for 34.7% of cash-market turnover in January 2025, but that does not mean individuals owned 34.7% of the market.

If you're asking because of the claim “90% of people lose money in the stock market,” that is a different statistic—and the commonly quoted 90% figure specifically relates to individual traders in equity derivatives, not ownership of the stock market.
